Ohana Festival restarts after rain delay with rousing sets by Eddie Vedder, My Morning Jacket and more.

To say it’s a breath of fresh ocean air in the overwhelmingly white male festival world is an understatement. Pearl Jam changed gears to play a rousing rendition of mid-’90s hit “Corduroy” before debuting another new song, “Alright,” and later played the punky “Superblood Wolfmoon” for a total of six songs off “Gigaton.”Įven the older material had plenty of deep cuts, such as “Immortality” off 1994’s “Vitalogy” and “Red Mosquito” off 1996’s “No Code,” the latter of which featured photographer Danny Clinch on the harmonica.Īmong the set’s other highlights was “Even Flow,” a hallmark of Pearl Jam’s live show allowing lead guitarist Mike McCready to craft a jam that makes each performance of one of the band’s earliest hits as unique as a snowflake, and a performance of “Black” in the encore, that was as haunting as it was upon its release 30 years ago.īefore she came out, Vedder quoted Carlile’s admiring description of Sunday’s slate of women performers as “power bitches.”Īnd that was another place where Ohana just felt very different from other festivals, beyond its laidback surfside setting and the feeling of most fans being present rather than watching behind a screen: some of the most dynamic women in music dominated the stage for hours before Pearl Jam closed the show.

The smaller (but still sold-out) setting of dedicated fans yearning to see the band in one of its only shows of 2021 was an amenable proving ground for “Gigaton” songs such as “Retrograde,” “Dance of the Clairvoyants,” “Quick Escape” and “Seven O’Clock” that opened the set. In the crowd, fans shared stories about seeing them at Chicago’s Wrigley Field and a few sported shirts from the Festival in Asbury Park, New Jersey, the previous weekend, Pearl Jam’s first full live performance in three years. And while Vedder is typically known for talking to the crowd, Ohana’s beachside setup provided a unique intimacy for a band that normally sells out stadiums and giant arenas and headlines enormous European festivals.
